Boysen Memorial 2025 – Post-Event Sustainability Report Summary
Published: [11.7.2025]
Event Date: July 2nd, 2025
Venue: Bislett Stadium, Oslo, Norway
Sustainability Commitments Delivered
Boysen Memorial 2025 was held with strong environmental and social responsibility at the core. Our approach was guided by the Athletics for a Better World Sustainable Event Standard, targeting Bronze Level Certification, and implementing the following key actions:
- Sustainability lead appointed: Sebastian Marrot from was officially assigned responsibility for sustainability.
- Public transport prioritization: All accommodated athletes received tickets to the Airport Express train and Oslo public transport system. Spectator communications emphasized green travel options.
- Minimized procurement – “Keep it simple”: Only essential products were purchased. We reused existing resources (e.g., water, muffins, volunteer t-shirts, signage, sponsor materials) and avoided unnecessary branded items.
- Electric vehicle usage: Our logistics and equipment transport were handled using an electric vehicle provided in partnership with Hyundai.
- Waste reduction and reuse: Holmenkollstafetten refillable water bottles were reused. Real plates from the stadium kitchen were used with some recyclable plates. Used banners and unbranded t-shirts were reused. Waste was sorted using Bislett’s existing systems.
- Vegan/vegetarian meals for crew: To reduce environmental impact, only vegetarian options were offered to staff and volunteers.
- Water refill station for all: We offered a water sanitation station at the stadium for easy bottle refilling, reducing single-use plastic.
Reduced Athlete Flight Travel – Key Highlights
- Recruitment limited to the closest countries to reduce total air travel distance.
- Average flight distance per international athlete was reduced compared to previous editions.
- Over 80% of international athletes came from within Scandinavia and nearby Northern/Western Europe.
- Encouraged travel by train and car for regional participants.
- CO₂ emissions from athlete flights were significantly lower than if athletes from all around the world could join Boysen Memorial.
- This approach aligns with World Athletics’ sustainability strategy and strengthens Oslo’s local environmental goals.
